Server responses and what they mean

There are three common server responses to messages that can’t make it through. Here’s what they’re REALLY telling you:
  1. Mailbox not found - this means it's an inactive email address. Not much you can do other than to contact the person by other channels and find out what the new address is.

  2. Server not found - this means the server has either been removed or it is blocking you. Your email vendor will need to contact the abuse department at this ISP, explain to them the situation and ensure that you are put on their white list

  3. Failure: unknown reason - this means the ISP is definitely blocking you. Need to get on their white list. The good thing about white lists is that once you’re on, you’re on. Messages from you will always make it past the spam filters and arrive safely in the customer’s inbox.
